Diversity: A Picture of Health
The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center is one of the largest and most successful health care systems in the nation. As we grow, so does our reach, gathering a new mix of patients, employees, and business partners for each community we enter.
To create a picture of health, we must build on our growing diversity — and our strategic diversity plan is doing just that. We are moving on three fronts:
- strengthening our ability to relate to each other and to those
we serve through diversity training and education
- broadening and retaining our pool of talent and providing advancement opportunities for all
- expanding strategic partnerships with diverse community organizations
Targeting people from all walks of life, our strategic diversity plan is both ambitious and far-reaching. It includes programs to benefit everyone from current UPMC staff to unemployed adults, from minority college students to people with disabilities, from community service organizations to women- and minority-owned businesses.
And since good results take time, we will track the plan's progress, build on our successes, and share our accomplishments with each other and our community. As a blueprint for our future, the strategic diversity plan will work toward keeping us competitive and cutting-edge.
How?
A diverse team of medical professionals delivers better health care to a variety of patients by building relationships and increasing a sense of trust. A body of scientists from different backgrounds contributes a broader scope of solutions. And a management team that respects and values the differences in its staff generates a wealth of ideas and makes decisions from a perspective that includes everyone.
Cultural awareness is as important to quality health care as any other skill required on the job. Remarkable things can happen when we encourage different points of view, value our various talents and skills, and learn from one another's experiences.
Putting Diversity Into Action
The beauty of diversity in action is that everyone is included: An environment that is open to everyone and recognizes and rewards the contributions of an entire workforce ignites motivation. As a result, everyone benefits — our health system, our patients, and ourselves.
