Renowned as a leader in health care delivery in the United States and internationally recognized for excellence, UPMC is once again establishing new paradigms for integrated health systems by sharing its health care delivery system, world-class clinical expertise, advanced technology, research, and management expertise with international partners to enhance health care globally. Headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, UPMC is an organization that leverages its core competencies, intellectual capital, and management expertise to create innovative products and business ventures.
UPMC’s achievements reach far beyond the boundaries of western Pennsylvania and the famous three rivers of Pittsburgh; its leadership and excellence in health care has extended internationally with footprints in Italy, Ireland, and Qatar. UPMC attracts the “best of the best” regarding medical scientists and health care professionals and puts them to work in a global environment of collaboration and communication that allows the best care to leap over geographical boundaries to reach patients in need.
Sharing Expertise Globally
UPMC’s international presence began a decade ago in southern Italy and has since expanded across Europe and into the Middle East. Through a unique partnership with the Region of Sicily, UPMC was able to bring specialized care for patients with life-threatening organ failure to Italy with the opening of ISMETT, a specialty transplant hospital in Palermo.
As part of its mission to bring the most advanced health care to patients world wide, UPMC is partnering with the Beacon Medical Group to operate the independent Beacon Hospital in Dublin, Ireland.
Beacon Cancer Centre, located within Beacon Hospital, was operated by UPMC prior to the agreement for UPMC to manage the entire hospital. Both Beacon Cancer Centre and UPMC Whitfield Cancer Centre, which is located in Waterford, are radiation oncology facilities. These centres bring the expertise and cutting-edge technology of UPMC Cancer Centers’ most advanced cancer diagnostic and treatment services to Ireland. Access to these services historically has been limited in some parts of Ireland, including Waterford where Whitfield Cancer Centre is now located.
Additionally, Hamad Medical Corporation is collaborating with UPMC to help improve emergency medical care and help to establish the first Level 1 Trauma Center in the State of Qatar.
With these successful expansions, UPMC is sharing its expertise globally, developing new paths to market, and forging partnerships with industry leaders. These initiatives promise to spark a new economic revitalization and jobs of the future in the United States and throughout the world.
Through established international presence and experience UPMC has the ability to leverage and successfully operate under changing governments. UPMC is eager to continue growing, expanding and collaborating. The continued overtures from diverse arrays of overseas partners is a clear indication of UPMC’s strong and positive reputation throughout the world.
